Medical Facilities
Medical facilities in Japan are divided into two
categories: private practice and general hospitals. Doctors in private
practice are located in residential neighborhoods, have close ties with
the neighborhood, and are conveniently located, with their offices small
in scale. General hospitals have many medical departments and are very
well-equipped; however, because there are many patients, the waiting
time can be very long. Also, some hospitals will not treat patients
without a letter of introduction.
If you are ill or injured and need medical assistance at a hospital
or clinic, you may need to choose a hospital or clinic according to
the illness or symptoms you have. For this reason, you should know the
locations and specialities of the various hospitals and clinics in your
area. On your first visit, you must bring cash, your foreign resident
registration card, as well as showing your health insurance card. On
subsequent visits to the same institution, you should bring your medical
examination card (shinsatsuken) which you will receive on your first
visit.

Emergency Clinics During the Holidays and at Night
As a general rule, medical facilities are not open
on holidays or at night. Medical facilities in the city set a schedule
for holiday duty.
